Jack Stapleton is a famous actor, and he's back in Texas in order to be there for his mother who has cancer. But Jack also has a stalker. The stalker sends him letters, presents, knows no boundaries, and is starting to become a problem. The studio for Jack's new movie insists that he gets some security.
And that's where Hannah Brooks comes in. She works for a highly regarded security firm based in Texas. They protect the wealthy and well-known all over the world. But Hannah's boyfriend (who also works at the security firm) just broke up with her, and she's dying to get away. She has no interest in staying in Texas to watch over a spoiled movie star with low level danger following him around.
When she meets him it's even worse than she thought. Jack is dismissive and rude, before agreeing to have security only if she pretends to be his girlfriend. He doesn't want to explain to his family that he's dealing with a stalker, so he figured introducing Hannah to his family as his girlfriend is the only way. Hannah's boss insists she does what is asked of her, and Hannah finds herself in a car with Jack Stapleton, driving to his family's ranch.
Jack is dealing with worry over his mother as well as the grief and guilt that stems from the death of his younger brother a couple years before. Jack's older brother still blames him for what happened, and the two can't stay in the same room without shouting at each other. Hannah is fighting to get over her feelings for her ex-boyfriend. When she and Jack start hitting it off, she imagines that they are just playing a part. She can't even imagine being tied down to one person and one place, just as much as she can't imagine a famous, sexy, movie star falling for her.
On the whole, I liked this book--although it's not one of my favorites. I liked the two protagonists, but I do wish that Hannah's strength and skills were used more. Katherine Center depicts Hannah as a badass who can kill people with pens. However, we don't see much of that. Besides Hannah beating Jack in a quick wrestle when she first meets him, her duties as bodyguard don't amount to much. She mostly follows him around at his parent's house, and he saves her from drowning. In the end, she slams a door shut, giving herself away and gets herself shot. I wish she had saved the day a little more decisively.
cbr15bingo: Violence - this one is a little bit of a stretch because there really is not much violence despite the plot. However, someone does get shot, so I'm counting it.
