#39 [2022/CBR14] Rogue Protocol by Martha Wells

Ever since one of my friends from book club recommended All Systems Red by Martha Wells, I've been working my way through the six novellas in the Murderbot Diaries series. Rogue Protocol (2018) is book 3, and it follows the "Murderbot" on its adventures.

So, the Murderbot is a "Secunit." A Secunit is basically a robot with some organic parts that is built and rented out to be used for security. The Murderbot calls itself Murderbot because it was involved in some kind of mass killing spree before the first book. Unfortunately, it can't remember exactly what happened or why, and it seems like much of these novellas is a slow ride towards the Murderbot figuring out what happened and who was behind it. The Murderbot has hacked its governor module, so it is not at the mercy of its orders anymore.

All Systems Red had the Murderbot protecting its human charges when they are unexpectedly attacked during a research expedition. Murderbot eventually grows something of a fondness for these humans, even as its incredibly uncomfortable with any kind of emotional intimacy. Instead, the Murderbot is much more comfortable experiencing human emotion through binge watching soap operas.

In Rogue Protocol, our Murderbot heads out to the edges of the galaxy in order to find evidence against Gray Cris--the company that attacked his clients in the first book. Murderbot runs into another group of humans that end up needing its protection. But this time the humans have a robot with them. This robot, Miki, has an incredibly close relationship with its human--something Murderbot has never seen before.

I have enjoyed reading each of these Murderbot books, and I'm always left wanting more. Fortunately, I have the next book waiting for me on my Kindle right now. However, I have to admit, that the storylines run together, and it's sometimes hard to remember any particulars. There is often a lot of fighting, where Murderbot dominates, but my favorite parts are the slow growth of Murderbot as it has more "human" experiences throughout the novellas.

Recommended.
